In one of my last trips to Cantabria I discovered the Cantabrian Wars, a popular festival that is celebrated every year at the end of August in The Corrales de Buelna, very close to the capital, Santander.

And the truth is that the popular parties They often become a good attraction on a tourist trip to a city or region.

This is the case of Cantabrian Wars, which attract thousands of visitors each year during its celebration.

They are some popular parties in which the resistance of the Cantabrian tribes before the occupation of the Romans, in the time of the emperor César Augusto, between the years 27 and 25 BC.

It is a recent festival, since it was in 2001 when about 400 inhabitants of The Corrales de Buelna they celebrated the first Cantabrian Wars using rented suits for their clothing.

After the popular success of the initiative, in the second edition it was decided to dispense with the rental of suits.

From then on, each participating group of legions o Cantabrian tribes They began to equip themselves with suits, weapons and accessories.

In these original popular festivals, one of whose events I had the opportunity to attend during my visit, participants more than 1.500 people grouped into 12 legions and 13 Cantabrian tribes.

During the dates of celebration of the Cantabrian Wars, more than one hundred thousand visitors gather each year.

Organized by the Cantabrian Wars Association, the dates of celebration of the Cantabrian Wars 2025 are from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 31.

When you arrive to The Corrales de Buelna, you see that the center of the festivities is in the so-called Festive Camp.

This camp occupies a large esplanade where on both sides of its entrance the tents of the roman legionss and the huts of the Cantabrian tribes.

In a great festive atmosphere, you will be struck by the excellent scenery of the venue, which is presided over by a replica of the Temple of Janus in original size, as well as the very careful period clothing of the hundreds of participants in them.

I will tell you that this great involvement of the inhabitants of The Corrales de Buelna It also translates into invitations to visitors to share food and drinks.

In the closed area with stands called Circus Maximus, you can attend different representations of the different events that occurred during the Cantabrian Wars.

In this regard, the characters that have the greatest prominence are the Cantabrian leader Corocotta and that of Roman general Marcus Agrippa.

Program of the Cantabrian Wars 2025 in Corrales de Buelna

El 2025 program of the Cantabrian Wars It begins with the opening of the Circus Maximus on Friday, August 22.

During the intervening week, various cultural events are held, such as archeology workshops and conferences on history.

The events for the following weekend begin on Friday, August 29 with the opening of a period market called Macellum.

The festivities end on Sunday the 1st with the general parade of tribes and legions which is celebrated at 18 p.m. in the Circus Maximus.
