What to see when visiting Kutna Hora

From the outset you should know that Kutna Hora It stands out for its numerous Gothic and Baroque buildings, with the most notable monuments being the gothic church of Santa Barbara and the great Church of the Assumption.

This city had its peak period during the 13th century thanks to the exploitation of a silver mine, and now it is a place with a certain tourist attraction, not suitable for all audiences, thanks to its Chapel of Bones.

Chapel of Bones in Kutna Hora

Three kilometers from the center of Kutna Hora, in the neighborhood Saddler, very close to the aforementioned church of the Assumption, you will find the cemetery, and inside, the so-called Chapel of Bones (Kostnice).

When you enter the Kostnice Chapel of Bones in Kutna Hora, one quickly realizes the reason for its name.

The chapel is actually an ossuary in which people crowd more than 40.000 human skeletons which at the end of the 19th century were extracted from the graves of the cemetery, where there was no longer enough space.

I will tell you that in Spain you can also see an ossuary with similar characteristics, specifically that of the Mozarabic church of Wamba near Valladolid.

If you decide to visit this macabre corner, you will see that thousands of skulls, tibias and all types of human bones are preserved there.

But in addition, they are not only stacked in spaces provided for this,

During your visit you will see that the bones have been used to decorate walls, columns, and even to create an impressive chandelier located in the center of the chapel.

In short, a very curious visit, not suitable for sensitive people who cannot tolerate macabre scenes, as, for example, also happens in Czech Republic in the Capuchin Crypt from the nearby city of Brno.

  • We have just returned from PRAGUE and the truth is, it was a fabulous trip both in KUTNA HORA AND IN KARLOVY VARY AND PRAGUE, a monumentally fantastic city. You walk a lot if you want to visit everything in four days, but it is worth it to repeat it later and with more days and peace of mind.

  • HELLO!!!
THIS SUMMER A FEW FRIENDS AND I HAVE DECIDED TO TRAVEL THROUGH SOME OF THE CITIES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC.
ONE OF THEM KUTNA HORA, AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF IT IS BETTER TO GO BY CAR (RENTAL), OR IS IT BETTER TO GO BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, AND IF SO, WHICH.
I HAVE ALREADY READ HOW TO GO TO KARLOVY VARY BY BUS, BUT WHICH DO YOU RECOMMEND BETTER CAR OR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION?

    THANK YOU

    • Josep, my opinion is conditioned because I love traveling by car, and whenever I can, I go by car. And in the case, for example, of Karlovy Vary, I went by rented car during a trip through the Republic. In any case, it is also a budget issue, since it is much cheaper to go by public transport.
