Where to start the West Coast route

From the outset, the west coast route will be conditioned by the flight option that you have hired.

Specifically, if you must take the return flight from the same city where you arrived, or if you do it from another city.

To plan the route, it is not the same as, for example, arriving to the west coast by San Francisco and you have to take the return flight from the same city, or start the return trip from Los Angeles, Las Vegas or, for example, Phoenix, Arizona.

This will condition you to make a rue circular or a rue ruler, with the advantages and disadvantages that this has.

Circular route along the West Coast

Al plan a route circular, in some cases it will allow you to better cover certain areas of interest, but on the other hand it can condition you not to “go too far” from your city of arrival and departure of your flights on the west coast.

For example, if you start your trip in San Francisco, and from that city you must take the return flight, to go to Las Vegas you can make the trip through the interior, by Yosemite and other national parks, and on the way back, you can pass through Los Angeles and subsequently, drive along the coast to San Francisco.

For example, if you arrive in San Francisco, you could plan the route in a north-south direction, so that taking the return flight in Phoenix, southern Arizona, you could even visit the area of sedona.

And in the opposite direction, if your flight were to arrive in Los Angeles, you could propose a route in a south-north direction, ending the trip visiting the yellowstone national park and taking the return flight, for example, in Salt Lake City.

Leave open days on the route

Al plan the route It is obvious that you must have the most important milestones of the trip clearly defined, but it is not necessary to make a complete schedule for each and every day.

The best thing to do is hire the helicopter first thing in the morning or at dusk, and dedicate the rest of the day to the excursion.

  • thank you for your answer!! The truth is that I will take it into account... it is what made me hold back the most... so if I start planning it... I will possibly have some questions... 🙂 thank you very much again!!!

  • hello jose luis!!

I was taking a look at your blog…all the information is very good! I'm thinking about planning a route along the west coast for 15 days in August... and my big question is... Is the temperature bearable? I expect it to be very hot but to what extent? I'm afraid of death valley... and dying dehydrated in the middle of the desert... hehehe, I read that you did your route in August... I would really appreciate it if you could tell me your experience, thank you! 🙂

    • Rosana, I will tell you that there is really no problem with the heat. At least, I didn't have it.

In San Francisco, due to its microclimate, it is even cold. In Yosemite, it is a very pleasant mountain temperature. Along the coast and Los Angeles, also very pleasant temperatures.

Where the heat is is inside. I didn't visit Death Valley, but you will go by car with full air conditioning.

In Las Vegas, indeed, it is also very, very hot, but in practice, there is air conditioning everywhere, and you can also get around by the internal train, which has air conditioning. And in other parks, like the Grand Canyon, although they may not give you the sensation of being flat landscapes, they are really at a high altitude (2.000 meters), and it is not hot either.

Except for Las Vegas, I honestly don't remember any heat. It's true that I didn't take walks in the sun at midday...

We want to go to the West coast in 2013, but we don't know if in July or September, what do you recommend?
Both for price and for better weather, first we want to spend a few days in NY or end up in Hawaii.
Thank you very much...this year we will finally make the big trip and I hope for your advice and help to be able to do it on our own.
    Greetings

    • Rosa, given the choice, September is the best time, since there are fewer tourists, there are better prices in hotels and the weather is still very good, even with less heat than in July. I would go in September...

      Enjoy the trip 🙂

    -Day12: San Francisco
    -Day13: San Francisco
    -Day14: San Francisco

I await your comments! Thanks a lot!

    • Javier, just a couple of considerations.

      – The day you travel from Yosemite to Las Vegas, you will have little time to visit the park in the morning, since the trip is long. Although, on the other hand, having booked the hotel in Las Vegas, there is no problem arriving late (on my trip from LA, I arrived at 3 in the morning...)

-As for the Grand Canyon, you will not be able to visit it well in just one day. It's best to set aside two days, which also allows you to see Route 66, with stops in Seligman and Williams.

      – The day you need, I would recover it with one less day in Los Angeles. As you have planned, you have enough time to see it on the scheduled days.

    • Thank you very much for your answer!!! In relation to Yosemite, I have some additional questions for you:
      1) Taking into account that we are continuing on our way to Las Vegas, where would it be best for us to go in the Park? Is it better for us to visit near the park entrance and not go too far or go in a particular direction so that the trip to Las Vegas is less km?
      2) If we want to camp, and taking into account the previous question, where would it be best for us to do it?
      Thank you very much again!

      • Javier, if you go to Las Vegas through the east of the park, crossing the mountain on the Tioga Road, there are fewer kilometers (although with a mountain road) and it allows you to see that mountain area. The problem is that in May it will surely be closed (http://guias-viajar.com/estados-unidos/california/epocas-cierre-carreteras-yosemite-climatologia/), so you must go west towards Fresno and then south.

In the park you must enter the Yosemite Valley, and on your way south, see if the Mariposa Grove area is open, to see the redwoods.

And as for camping, I won't know how to guide you because I don't know where the camping areas are. I'm sorry.

  • I would like to ask you about the weather in general for traveling along the west coast and parks. Is February a good time?
    Thank you

    • Mariana,

Although I traveled to the west coast in August, I will tell you that in February, in the inland parks you cannot circulate in the high areas, and you can even find them snowy and difficult to circulate. Keep in mind that, for example, the Grand Canyon is 2.100 meters high, although you only see a plain. Obviously, you can be lucky and find some good days, very cold but sunny.

Therefore, in general, it is not a good time to visit inland national parks, as you run the risk of encountering snow, fog and problems with driving.

On the coast, in Los Angeles, the weather is pleasant, cool during the day, and colder at night. But nice to visit.

In the case of San Francisco, it has a very particular microclimate, since you have to dress warmly until August. In winter it is really cold, but dressed warmly you can have a good visit.

  • Next December specifically, from the 21st and for 9 days, we plan to take a trip through the US, starting from Durango, CO (we have our “girl” studying there) and arriving in San Francisco after having visited Gran Canyon, Las Vegas, Yosemite, all this by car, of course. I would like to receive information from travelers who took the route, although the majority do it in reverse (S.Francisco-Gran Canyon), and above all to know opinions of those who went around those end-of-year dates, since the routes will change a lot. things about going in spring-summer, for example, how we go in the middle of winter. I would also appreciate information on hotels, motels, more convenient routes, etc... MUXUS to all collaborators and see you in a little while.
