Driving route along the West Coast of the United States

If it is the first time you are going to travel to the west coast of the United States, depending on the time you have, you should focus on doing the essential visits.

To do this, it is advisable to plan a route that combines the three large cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles y Las Vegas) with the most beautiful towns and natural environments.

On this occasion I am going to propose a 15-day route along the West Coast by essential sites What you should include in your trip, starting from San Francisco, to Yosemite y Los Angeles, and ending well in Las Vegas or in Phoenix, southern Arizona.

You should also make sure that you travel with a good travel insurance, taking into account the very high coverage What you will need to travel to the United States with peace of mind.

On the proposed route, since the arrival city of your flight to the west coast is different from the departure city, at the time of book flights Perhaps the most advisable thing is to first book a trip from Spain to New York, or some other city in the eastern United States.

Subsequently, to get to the west coast, you can search for offers at american companies low cost for the outbound flight to San Francisco and return from Las Vegas or Phoenix.

This combination may not cost you more than booking a round-trip flight directly from Spain to, say, Los Angeles or San Francisco.

As to accommodation, it is recommended Search and book hotels in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, as well as in the most uninhabited areas of the interior, such as Grand Canyon and the Monument Valley.

  • Hello José Luis, your blog is very good, I congratulate you.
We are planning a trip at the end of May with my wife on the west coast, arriving in San Francisco with the idea of traveling along the coast to Napa, from there to Las Vegas to return to San Francisco and from there return to Argentina, as Do you recommend us to organize our trip, must-see cities, etc.
    Thank you very much already.

    Mariano

    • Mariano, you don't tell me how many days you have planned for your trip along the west coast.

On the other hand, isn't it your intention to go through Los Angeles?

  • Thank you Jose Luis,

The truth is that since the trip is still very green, we have not yet decided what we want to visit en route... Nor from which airport would it be best to return to Barcelona.

Yes, we have a very general idea, which is San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Cañon Colorado. What we have to decide is the routes... what would you recommend we visit from San Francisco to Los Angeles for the first time? interior or coast?
And... to return, taking into account that the last thing to visit will surely be the Grand Canyon... I really don't know which is the best airport to return to..., and if we return from another destination (other than San Francisco) if the car supplement for leaving it somewhere else is very high.

    Thank you again.

    Greetings. Raquel

    • Raquel, to plan the route, I recommend that you read the different visits to the west coast, so that you can see what you would like to visit the most.

Regarding going from San Francisco to Los Angeles, if you are then going to take a circular route to return to San Francisco to catch the plane back, it is clear that you must go along the coast.

Although one route could be San Francisco-Los Angeles-Las Vegas, and from here visit several parks and then return to Las Vegas to catch the plane back.

In this case, if you want to visit Yosemite (it is a very beautiful park, but it will not surprise you because it is very similar to the Pyrenees, yes, with the giant sequoias), you can initially go inland, and then join the coast in San Simeon to see Hearst Castle, really impressive (the cliffs of Big Sur are not worth it).

From there you go down to Los Angeles through Santa Barbara.

In order to calculate exchange prices, take into account low-cost companies, such as Air Tran.

  • Hello good. I would like to know cheap car rental companies in San Francisco, if they are at the airport better. What prices can they have? thank you

  • Hello Jose Luis,

We are planning to travel to the west coast of the United States, 4 friends. We would surely have 14 days (last of August and first of September), and we are quite clear about the places we want to visit (although from now on to start booking there may of course be nuances..., we have to meet and prepare, etc.).
The clear points are to visit San Francisco perhaps for a couple of days, go through Los Angeles (no more than 1 day, 1 night, because it doesn't attract us too much, except the walk of fame... hehe) and from there go to Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. What I'm not very clear about are the distances, that's why I wanted to ask you if 14 days is enough (without having to be stressed with the schedules, but also without recreating ourselves of course) and what would you recommend we visit in the area, other than a city, e.g. beaches, natural parks, that you think we cannot miss apart from the Grand Canyon.
One last question, I would love to get on Route 66, I think that to go from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, we have to pass right?
Regarding accommodation, I have already seen that you recommend booking in the cities and in the Grand Canyon, en route it is not necessary, right? As for driving an automatic car, there will be no problem, plus it would be fun for us to drive a typical American car... 😉 I hope so...

Well, thank you very much for your attention... (I may come back with more questions in a while)

    Greetings!!! Raquel

    • Raquel, understanding that the trip is only along the west coast, I tell you that with 14 days you have enough time to get to know it well and not be rushed.

In order to make some recommendations, I would like to know what route you plan to take. I think you start in San Francisco, but I don't know if you want to go inland or along the coast, and where you're coming back from.

I tell you that I totally agree with seeing Los Angeles in a single day. You have time to see the Walk of Fame, tour Downtown, go up to the Griffith Observatory observation deck, go through Beverly Hills and visit Santa Monica Beach. Of course, if you want to go to Universal Studios, especially to tour the sets, you need another day.

As for Route 66, it is the way to go on the drive from Las Vegas to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Don't forget to turn left at Kingsman to take the old route, passing through Seligman and arriving at Williams.

And as for accommodation, don't worry, it is not essential to book except in the indicated places, cities and the Grand Canyon, or near some other inland national park, in the most inhospitable areas.

  • Thank you very much for the quick and concise response.

One last question. I understand that to stay in SFO, the best area is Union Square. Any area you suggest for Los Angeles???

    Thanks again

    • Gabriel, I can't help you with this. I stayed in a motel next to one of the major highways that cross Los Angeles because it was close to Universal Studios, easy to locate and allowed me to travel quickly to the different areas of Los Angeles.

Keep in mind that Los Angeles has a very extensive urbanized area, and since I assume you are driving, I do not advise you to stay in the central area.

    • I assure you that you will not have any problem finding a room in a motel on the route on the fly. Just two comments:

      – If you are going to visit the national parks in Arizona, such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, etc., it would be advisable to reserve a room, since there are few towns and motels in that area. In the case of the Grand Canyon, there are several motels, but by booking in advance you can ensure a room in the motel that best suits your budget.

      – It is advisable that you try to find a room no later than 19 p.m. This way you will have no problem finding a room and you will be able to have dinner without any problem because I remind you that in the United States you have dinner early. I stayed a couple of nights without dinner to rush the route!

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask.

      Enjoy the trip
      José Luis

  • Hello Jose Luis,

First of all, thank you for publishing this blog. It is being of great help to me.

I am clear about the need to book city hotels (SFO, Las Vegas and Los Angeles) from here in advance. My biggest question is whether to do the same with motels. We are going the 2nd fortnight of August (I know you did it the 1st fortnight).

Did you have any problems finding a motel one night in small towns? Is the time of arrival in these towns limiting to find a motel? If you have reserved them, do you also have to arrive at a specific time to keep the reservation?

  • I find your contributions very interesting to people who want to travel to the west coast of the USA. Could you tell me how to access your notebook?
    Thank you.

  • Hello Jose Luis

I can't stop visiting your website to get drunk with information. It's great what you do. My boyfriend and I want to go to the west coast next year. We are still starting to look at something now. Could you, initially, tell us if in the first half of September the trip could be a little cheaper or if it is the same as going in July? We are not yet very clear about the date, since we have to think about it very carefully due to the work of both of us. It is not easy for us to take vacations so that we can coincide. In principle we have two possibilities: last fortnight of July or last week of August and September.

When we have a bit more clarity on the route, I would like to tell you about it, to see what you can advise us, since all your advice is so helpful, especially for people like us who have visited the United States in our lives. We haven't even taken the plane that far, which scares us a little.

I would be very grateful if you could give us a hand.

    All the best

    Sylvia Garcia
    Santiago de Compostela

    • Silvia, from what I see, you are a very early riser when it comes to preparing for the trip.

Regarding the dates you propose, I can help you little. Just two comments. If I were in your case, I would make the trip in the first half of September. Typically, you will be less hot when traveling inland along the coast, specifically in the national parks and in Las Vegas. And, likewise, there will be fewer tourists than at the end of July.

I made my trip in the first half of August, and the truth is that you don't find mass tourism almost anywhere. The United States is very, very big...

And regarding prices, I don't think there is much difference.

As for doubts about the route, do not have any problem asking any questions you may have on the website.

  • Hello, I'm Sandra, well I see that you are an expert in the United States, well, let me tell you, in February I want to surprise my husband who has been for 40 years and I would like to take a route through some of the places you have been, What happens is that I have the misfortune of only having between 10 and 11 days, the places that I like
and the route that I had thought was two days San Francisco 2nd Los Angeles and since I have to go to the Grand Canyon what happens is that I am very lost, I would like you to advise me if maybe which of these cities is cooler or if to visit or if you think Maybe I'll skip San Francisco and start the route through Los Angeles. On the way to the Grand Canyon, I don't know which are the essential towns to visit, although the most important thing I want to tell you is that we don't have a license so I would have to take separate excursions. tour to reach national parks, but where can I do it from, from Los Angeles? Please if you can guide me

    • Sandra, not being able to drive a car will certainly limit you on a West Coast trip.
From my point of view, you have two options left: hire an organized trip from a Spanish agency to make the trip to the United States; and the other, analyze if it is cheaper for you to organize it on your own by traveling by plane between the important cities on the west coast, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and hire a nearby excursion, from an American agency.

In the case of the Grand Canyon, you either book a bus tour or sign up for a day trip by small plane and then by helicopter.

As a result of your questions, I am immediately going to publish a topic about excursions that can be hired from American agencies from these cities, I direct people in your circumstances.
