When right now you arrive to Madrid by AVE, you will verify that access to the Atocha station has changed because since the train leaves you on the platforms, you have to make a journey of about eight minutes along walkways and mechanical ramps until you reach the exit.

This is because, coinciding with the inauguration in December 2010 of the new AVE line that connects Madrid with Valencia, the new AVE Arrivals Terminal in the Atocha station de Madrid.

This new terminal It is the first phase of the large expansion works that are being carried out in Atocha, which will allow the current capacity of 16 million passengers per year to be expanded to 35 million, once the entire project is completed in 2025.

Since the inauguration of the new terminal, to catch an AVE train You have to continue using the same upper lobby as in Atocha.

However, now you come for a completely new lobby and away from the exits.

Then I explain How do you access the new AVE Arrivals Terminal in Atocha?.

1.- New extended platforms

Since there was no space at Atocha to increase the number of platforms, the only way to address the major expansion underway at the station was to extend the platforms of the 15 available tracks, all of which now have international gauge.

In this way, when the AVE leaves you on the platform, the first thing you have to do is go up some escalators to some walkways that cross the platforms.

2.- Departing AVE trains

From the top of the walkway you can see the AVE trains in the background that, using the same platform, are located next to the Departures Terminal, ready to start the journey.

3.- New Arrivals hall

From the walkway you will access a new metal structure, the arrivals hall of Meters long 110 and 32 meters wide along which two rolling tapestries take you to the new lobby

4.- New Arrivals hall

The moving walkway ends in the new lobby of the Arrivals Terminal, from which you can now go out onto the street or you can access the Atocha Station building to take the metro or go to the Cercanías train interchange.

As a complement, on the page Renfe you find all the information about railway routes and train schedules in Spain.

    • Rafael, you are going to be very tight on time because it is a certain distance to go from the arrival area to the departures. Perhaps the best thing is that instead of going up the stairs to the corridor that takes you to the station, you go directly along the platform to the terminal. Consult with an AVE employee.
