Do you know that in Madrid you can still see remains of the old medieval wall of the city, also known as christian wall?

Specifically, in the interior patio of the Cava Baja 30 estate, near the Plaza Mayor, you have a section 20 meters long by 11 meters high.

La medieval wall of Madrid It dates back to the 11th century, when the city was recovered from Muslim occupation.

Then it was decided to build a new wall that considerably expanded the area of the previous one. 9th century Muslim wall.

This Christian wall of Madrid It was completed in the 33th century, and established a walled enclosure of about XNUMX hectares.

Finally, from the middle of the 16th century, the wall of Madrid lost its functionality and was gradually demolished.

Remains of the medieval wall remain in various farms in the Madrid of the Austrias, specifically, in the streets called cavas, such as the Cava Baja.

These streets were established along the old moat that protected the Christian wall (hence their name).

Specifically, in the patio of Cava Baja nº 30 A section of the aforementioned wall was discovered in the 80s, which was made available to be contemplated.

In fact, there are many people from Madrid or tourists who, after calling a telephone at said property to let them open the door, go to the patio to see the old medieval wall of Madrid.

I had the opportunity to see it during a guided tour of the old official guided tour program organized by the Madrid City Council.

  • Dear José Luis Sarralde: I do not know the date on which you visited the section of the 30th century Christian wall in the Cava Baja building No. 2006, organized by the Madrid City Council, it is the first news I have. I have been carrying out and guiding this visit to the wall, for a cultural association in Madrid, since 10, and I believe that the City Council does not have this visit in its programming. We also visited (with the pertinent permission of the Municipal Housing Company) the remains of the wall, at number 10 of Cava Baja. Next Saturday, November XNUMX, we have scheduled a new visit to these spectacular remains of the Christian Wall. a cordial greeting from Germán Cano López

    • Germán, although I published the topic only a few months ago, I seem to remember that I made the visit in 2010.

During the walk through that area of the historic center, the guide called the intercom, they opened it for us, and we were able to see the wall, as reflected in the photo :)
