By then José de Murga y Reolid, Marquis of Linares, he told his father, Mateo Murga Michelena, who wanted to marry Raimunda de Osorio y Ortega, a young woman of humble condition.

But even though his father had always recommended that he marry for love, he found his total opposition, to the point that he sent him to England.

The legend tells that José de Murga, reviewing his late father's documents, found a letter addressed to him in which he explained his opposition: Raimunda, already his wife, was actually his stepsister as a result of a relationship with a cigarette maker.

Consequently, José de Murga decided to go to Pope Leo XIII, who granted him a papal bull which authorized spouses to live together, but in chastity.

Subsequently, José de Murga was appointed Marquis of Linares by King Amadeus I of Savoy in 1873, and at that time he commissioned the construction of the artistic work of the Linares Palace.

But according to the Madrid writer Clara Tahoces in his book Magic Madrid Guide, it's just a legend.

Among other details, Raimunda She was not the daughter of a cigarette maker and papal bull never existed.

  • There is a very good book on this topic, by the historian Carmen Maceiras, “El secreto de Raimunda”, which shows that the origin of the Marchioness of Linares does not differ much from what the legend says.
