You will agree with me that the Lady of Elche It is one of the most important archaeological pieces that can be seen in Spain, specifically, in the National Archaeological Museum de Madrid.

Therefore, in my recent tourist trip to Elche, riding a Alicante, I was curious to know the history of this archaeological piece from the time of the Iberians (between the 5th and 4th centuries BC), and I hoped to do so during the visit of the Archaeological Museum.

But although at the same entrance to the renovated museum there is a life-size replica of the Lady of Elche, right there I was able to know that to know its history I had to visit the place of its discovery in 1897, the Alcudia site, very close to Elche.

Instead, the visit of MAHE Archaeological and History Museum of Elche It allowed me to approach in a very didactic way the history of this Levantine peninsular area since the Neolithic era.

This museum, until the major renovation completed in May of 2006, was limited to some exhibition rooms in the Altamira Palace, also known as Palace of the Lordship, an old fortification that dates back to Muslim times, at the end of the 11th century, and which

Today, this castle located next to the Palmeral Municipal Park of Elche, and the almost adjacent Minor Basilica of Saint Mary, make up the monumental center of the Elche town.

After the major renovation, a modern building has been attached to the castle building where two large exhibition spaces have been located in which archaeological pieces are displayed from the Neolithic to the Visigoths, with special emphasis on the Iberian and Roman times. .

Thus, access to MAHE Archaeological Museum of Elche You must do it for the modern building next to the aforementioned castle-fortification.

When designing the exhibition area of the museum, emphasis has been placed on offering more information and making it more didactic, compared to the display of many archaeological pieces.

Therefore, during your visit it is advisable that you stop to see the different information panels, in addition to appreciating the archaeological samples, among which it is worth highlighting the Venus of Ilici.

You will also be struck by a Roman column of those that were at the crossroads in this region. Or the numerous pieces of Roman coins from ancient Iberian city of Ilici which became a Roman colony with the right to mint its own coins.

Finally, to see archaeological pieces and objects from more recent times, from the new building you will enter the grounds of the Altamira Palace, and you will pass next to a section of the old Almohad wall.

The Visiting hours of the Archaeological Museum of Elche They are, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10,30:13,30 a.m. to 16,30:20 p.m., and from XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. to XNUMX p.m. On Sundays it is only open in the morning.
