Photographic tour with the best images of the historic center of Girona in Catalonia, its medieval walled enclosure and the Jewish quarter Call

Three years ago was the first time I visited the Girona city, riding a Catalonia, but since my trip was intended to attend the international congress of travel bloggers TBEX, the truth is that I did not have time to take a walk through the historic center of the city.

It was recently when I returned to Girona and I have been able to discover the charm of this small city, whose first walled enclosure, the Forca Vella, dates back to Roman times, and where you can still see stones from the original fortification.

Of course from my first trip to Girona I already knew the best-known image of the city that makes up the Onyar Houses.

Its very colorful facades that extend along the banks of the river of that name make up a very beautiful postcard with the towers of the cathedral and church of Sant Feliú the background.

But on this occasion I have been able to tour the interior of said first walled enclosure, as well as the expansion of the medieval wall.

There I have discovered the most important monuments and corners of the city, where many times you feel transported to another bygone era, a vision that leads you to understand the connection between Girona and Game of Thrones, as this city became one of the settings for the famous television series.

The Girona cathedral, built between the 11th and 13th centuries.

This monument combines various architectural styles, such as Romanesque in the cloister, Gothic in its interior nave, the widest ever built in this style, and Baroque in its main façade.

Although I have found the main examples of the Romanesque in the old Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants and in the near chapel of San Nicolau.

Of course I have walked through the narrow alleys of the Jewish neighborhood, Girona call, with its passages and staircases.

I have also had the opportunity to see the beautiful corner of the Cuesta of Saint Domenec and the baroque staircase that takes you up to the old church convent of Sant Martí, 17th century.

Or the Banos Arabes, from the 12th century, which are not actually the work of the Arabs, but rather their style was copied by the masters who built them.

  • One of the best cities in Spain, perhaps not because of its greatness, but because of its historical content, it is a shame that it is being populated by people who, for the most part, do not know how to appreciate or respect.

  • I live very close to Girona and the truth is that I have never decided to visit it as it deserves. The photos are great, and above all they make you want to walk through its streets.

    Thanks for the entry, greetings!

  • Magnificent photos!! It will be great for me, I also have a trip planned to Girona and the Pyrenees.
