On my trips I always like to search beautiful town to visit, and it could not be less in one of the most recent trips to the Costa Brava, in the province of Girona.

On this occasion I already had on the agenda the intention of visit Monells, a town that has become famous for being the setting of the film “8 Catalan surnames”, and Tossa de Mar, to discover its old city.

But some friends suggested me visit Begur, which I did not doubt.

At the outset I will tell you that Begur It is located in one of the most beautiful and charming environments in the city. Costa Brava, within the region of Lower Ampurdán.

Very close to the charming town of Calella de Palafrugell and the coastal path that connects it with Llafranc, as well as the gothic town of Pals.

The visit was actually a first approximation, a first contact with Begur framed in a route through the area, with the purpose of returning more quietly in the future.

Therefore, this quick visit only allowed me to discover some of its main attractions, such as its bays or on medieval castle.

From the center of Begur You have several within less than ten kilometers beaches in coves which you reach through winding roads, such as Sa Tuna o Sa Riera.

These are not the small isolated coves between cliffs that you find near Tossa de Mar, but as in the case of Sa RieraWithIt is a small urban enclave on the shores of a beach.

Surrounded by low houses, most of them holiday residences, this Sa Riera beach shows the typical image of boats on the sand.

For its part, when you arrive at the town of Begur You must leave your car in the parking lots in the outer area, and then go up to the historic center along narrow pedestrian streets.

With a long history that dates back to prehistory, and with a great boom in medieval times, what will catch your attention the most about this historic center are the watchtowers that are still preserved.

They are stone towers built in the 16th century that were built to protect the population from Moorish pirates.

Another aspect worth highlighting are the numerous Indian manor houses built during the 19th century by inhabitants of Begur who at that time went to make their fortune in America, especially in Cuba.

Our Begur visit We focus on the climb to the remains of his medieval castle, which although it can also be done by car, we did it on foot from the center.

Here you have several excursions and nautical activities which you can sign up for during your vacation stay in Begur.

Along the narrow streets leading up to the castle you will be able to see beautiful corners with stone houses, but also with facades painted in striking colors.

You will also pass next to one of the aforementioned defensive towers.

The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, and it is documented that its owner was Arnust of Begur.

Later, in 1605 the castle became property of the municipality of Begur, although during the Napoleonic Wars it was practically destroyed.

Located in a spectacular location, now there are hardly any remains of the wall and a tower from which you have beautiful views of the town of Begur and the landscapes that surround it.

In short, a first contact and an invitation to return to Begur to enjoy its attractions more calmly, such as the nearby Romanesque town of Esclanyá.

I already know it will be worth it!
