Until the recent trip through the province of Valladolid I had not had the opportunity to see a mozarabic church, but now you have had the opportunity to visit what is considered the largest Hispanic building of this period.

This is the church of San Cebrián de Mazote, a small town located about 40 kilometers west of the city of Valladolid.

In the Valladolid province I have also visited the Wamba church, a beautiful building also mozarabic architecture, although its most notable characteristic is its Visigothic origin.

If you are really curious to see a mozarabic church, the best example is found in the aforementioned town of San Cebrian de Mazote, in its current parish church of San Cypriano.

In reality it is a pre-romanesque church from the time of the reconquered, whose structure is supported by a succession of horseshoe arches.

Its origin dates back to a small Visigoth church from the 7th century, on which the current structure with Mozarabic architectural elements.

After various modifications in subsequent centuries, it was at the beginning of the 20th century when the artistic importance of this church was recognized, and various restorations were undertaken to show the appearance that you can now see when you visit it.

What to see when visiting the San Cebrián Mazote church

El exterior of the church of San Cebrián de Mazote shows the image of a large parish church with brick walls, without pointing out any element that announces its mozarabic style.

Inside you find a floor plan with three naves where the horseshoe arches that separate the side naves from the central nave, which is much higher in height.

The header with three apses, also with horseshoe arches, shows great aesthetic sobriety, and upon it opens a dome.

On your walk through this church you will see that the restored and reinterpreted areas clearly differ from the originals.

In the central nave, with a wooden roof and side windows through which light enters, what will especially catch your attention is the succession of columns, many of them possibly reused even from Roman buildings.
