Surely you know that Gardens of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso They are one of the most interesting places you can visit around Madrid.

If you don't know him, I can tell you that you will find a little Royal Palace located in a dream environment.

At the foot of the lush forests of the Sierra de Guadarrama, on its northern slope of the Segovia province, is this palace that was founded in 1721 by the king Philip V as a residence during his hunting trips.

The palace is surrounded by huge and beautiful gardens with classic French style, which extend over 146 hectares.

Why visit the Royal Palace of La Granja

You will actually have three reasons to make a tourist visit.

On the one hand, visiting the building of the Royal Palace,; for another, walk through its gardens; and finally what attracts the most visitors throughout the year, see its monumental fountains in operation.

Now, the vast majority of visitors stay in the lower part of the complex, strolling through the gardens that surround the palace and seeing the most important fountains.

But one of the most curious things about this palace is that the water supply to the fountains maintains its original 18th century project, based on its storage in a large pond.

And the reality is that the vast majority of visitors do not walk up to the pond, as has happened to me until my most recent visit.

Where is the Bridge of Sighs in La Granja

There I discovered a really amazing landscape and, above all, a charming corner, very little known, but which has the name of one of the sites visited by tourists in the city of Venice.

I mean the Bridge of Sighs, of which there is another version in the university city of Oxford in England.

In the case of Bridge of Sighs of the gardens of Royal Palace of La Granja, it is a bridge neoclassical built with wood from the nearby forests of Valsaín.

It is located on the west side of the large rectangular pond which is known as The sea.

It was built during the reign of Carlos III in the 18th century and is one of the outstanding elements of these impressive french style gardens that surround the palace.

Why is it called Bridge of Sighs?

But why is it called Bridge of Sighs?

In the case of Venice Bridge of Sighs, it seems that its name comes from the sigh made by the prisoners who crossed the bridge from the Doge's Palace until they reached the dungeons that were in an adjacent building.

In the case of Oxford Bridge of Sighs, which separates the buildings where the boys and girls lived from the Hertford Residence Hall, one of the first co-ed schools in the city, seems to be due to the sigh they made when they separated.

Currently, this bridge separates an administrative building from a residential building.

And in the case of Bridge of Sighs of the Royal Farm Gardens, it seems to be due to his romantic appearance and its quiet surroundings that invite you to sigh in admiration.

Whether it's true or not, it doesn't really matter, but I do recommend that in your next visit to the Royal Palace of La Granja, go up to the pond to see this charming corner,

Without a doubt, it is one of the most outstanding in this landscape environment where there are many ornamental fountains and sculptures.
