One of the attractions of autumn in the surroundings of Madrid is to be able to enjoy the beauty and charm of the beech which can still be seen in the northern mountain range of the province.

The problem is that to know the most notable ones, such as the Hayedo de Montejo, In the Sierra del Rincón, or the Tejera Negra beech forest, already in the province of Guadalajara, you must make a prior reservation for the visit, which is carried out with limited spaces.

However, on this occasion we are going to talk to you about La Pedrosa beech forest, which you can visit freely, without the need for a reservation.

Also known as the Riaza Beech Forest, this little beech forest of 87 hectares of surface extends along the northern slope of the Sierra de Ayllón in the Segovia province.

How to get to the La Pedrosa Beech Forest in Riaza

Specifically, in the Riaza Valley, behind the aforementioned Tejera Negra beech forest, in the natural park of the Northern Sierra of Guadalajara.

To be able to walk among its imposing beech trees, as I did last autumn, it is best to go to Riaza, a town famous for its beautiful arcaded square, and one of the traditional places in this area to eat lamb and suckling pig.

From Riaza you should go for the SG-112, road that passes next to Riofrío de Riaza go up to the Quesera port, on a route that if you continued would take you to the black towns of Guadalajara.

It is in the upper part of the road, almost reaching the port that delimits the provinces of Segovia and Guadalajara, when you can see the beech forest.

This forest extends along the mountainside at an altitude of between 1.500 and 1.700 meters.

As you go up the road, or if you come down from the top of the port, you will see signs indicating that you are in the area of the La Pedrosa beech forest.

If you go a fall weekend, as was the case with me visit to the Hayedo de la Pedrosa, you will not need those directions, since you will find the road with cars parked in the few spaces that are available.

Where to park your car in the Hayedo de Riaza

Don't be surprised if you see cars lined up on both sides of the same road, which, I warn you, can complicate the movement of vehicles quite a bit.

at the top of the Quesera port It is where there is more space for to park the car, and from there you can walk down to the beech forest area.

When I visited him in the fall, the La Pedrosa beech forest The leaves were already fallen, so the forest did not show the classic autumn image of trees full of yellow leaves.

But I will tell you that the whimsical shapes of the beech trunks, in many cases covered with green moss, and the carpet of yellow and ocher leaves, make up a beautiful and charming scene.

As you can imagine, this is a highly recommended visit for photographers.

I assure you that you will enjoy this excursion, a perfect nature complement for a getaway to the aforementioned Segovian town of Riaza or to the aforementioned route of the black towns of Guadalajara.
