Your walk through historic center of Segovia will be centered on the axis of the real street, which since Roman aqueduct it takes you up the hill towards the Town Hall Square, where is the cathedral, and from where you are already heading to awesome Alcazar.

When you are already at the top of the hill, and shortly before reaching the aforementioned Town Hall Square, you are going to find yourself face to face with the Romanesque church of San Martin.

Curiosities and history of the church of San Martín

This church dating back to the 12th century is the main monument of San Martín square, whose panoramic view shows you towers and mansions that maintain the aforementioned medieval city atmosphere.

From the almost complete church of San Martín his attention will catch your attention bell tower brick and Mudejar Romanesque style.

But, above all, the porticoed gallery that surrounds the church, with its arches located on stone columns with Romanesque capitals, in which the wear and tear of time does not prevent us from seeing religious scenes.

Also, look at the Romanesque apse of the church.

Other monuments in the Plaza de San Martín

But the architectural beauty of the San Martín square in Segovia It is not limited to its Romanesque church.

On the east façade of the square there are several old palaces of the nobility, among which the so-called Tower of Lozoya, which is now a showroom for the Caja Segovia Social Work, perhaps the most popular exhibition space in the city.

To go up to the tower, you have to pass by the Monument to Juan Bravo, one of the community leaders of the 16th century, who promoted the uprising in the city of Segovia against the royal troops.

And at the end of the square is the building of the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art.

  • Without a doubt, Segovia is a city that you have to visit if you like art and architecture. And also just a stone's throw away we can visit other very interesting places, such as La Granja, El Palacio de Riofrío and the medieval towns of Pedraza, Turégano and Sepúlveda.
