When making a excursion through the interior of the island of Gran Canaria You have several possible routes and places to visit, but on any route you choose you have an obligatory stage, the picturesque town of Tejeda.

In the interior of this island you will find large, deep ravines, with leafy oases in some of the valleys and some small towns that extend along the slopes of the wild ravines.

It is almost in the same geographic center of the island where you find Tejeda, a town that will offer you excellent Panoramic views of the landscapes of the interior of the island, and from where you can even see the nearby island of Tenerife.

In addition, from Tejeda you can see two geological enclaves that are icons of the island of Gran Canaria, The Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga.

The image of The Roque Nublodeclared Natural Monument, is one of the symbols of the island.

Located 1.800 meters above sea level, it is a large rock of volcanic origin that is more than 70 meters high.

In turn, the Roque Bentayga It was a sacred place for the island's aborigines.

Nearby are the King's Caves, caves that were inhabited by the ancient Canarian settlers, and where they have left their vestiges.

And in front of Roque Bentayga, on the side of a mountain, extends the town of Artenara, another of the essential places to visit on the route through the interior of the island, where you can learn about the tradition of cave houses that dates back to the time of said ancient Canarians.

If you come from the south of the island on your excursion, after passing through Fataga y San Bartolomé, the road will take you along the slopes of the mountain where the The Roque Nublo.

But I can tell you that you will only see this great rock well (although in the distance) from Tejeda.

Instead, Roque Bentayga You have it much closer, looking north from Tejeda, and contrasting with the image in the background, which is the island of Tenerife.

What to see and do when visiting Tejeda

Tejeda It is a small and beautiful town, a good example of the traditional canarian architecture, with houses with white facades and wooden balconies from which leafy bougainvilleas hang.

By your disposition, Tejeda It becomes a great viewpoint of the wild landscapes that surround it.

In your Tejeda's visit You will walk through a park with lush vegetation, where you can see botanical varieties that are very common in the Canary Islands, like the striking red tagine (plant also known as the Pride of Tenerife).

And also a huge tree Indian Laurel next to Church of Our Lady of Help.

Built in 1921, inside this church you will see three naves with great luminosity caused by its large windows and white walls.

Don't be surprised if you get to Tejeda and it is full of tourists, because, as I have mentioned, it is a must-see on inland routes.

But above all it is an enclave highly visited by international tourism, where they come to hiking through the area, some of whose routes take you to the aforementioned rocks.

Tejeda marzipan

If you like sweets, don't leave this beautiful town without first having tried the peculiar Tejeda marzipan, which they make in the Nublo Sweets.

The guide who accompanied us on the route around the island warned us of the existence in Tejada of what is considered the best pastry on the island of Gran Canaria, and that marzipan was made there, although different from the peninsular one.

I recognize my weakness for sweets and, specifically, among my favorites, marzipan, which is why this pastry shop became an obligatory stop on the route.

How would he be Marzipan from Gran Canaria?

After entering the Nublo Sweets and reviewing the super-sweet window display, I discovered that marzipan had a very different presence from the typical Christmas sweet from the peninsula.

Outwardly, it looks like a cake, although its texture has nothing to do with the characteristic sponginess of this pastry product.

When tasting the marzipan, its very powerful (and quite sweet) almond flavor stands out, making it a very sweet. overwhelming, compared to the finesse of peninsular marzipan.

With very little you try, you are already satisfied.

La marzipan preparation In this area of the island, which dates back half a century, it is carried out thanks to the existence of numerous almond trees.

In fact, other sweets are made in this bakery, such as nutty or, above all, the delicious bienmesabe, a delicious and very sweet complement to desserts made, for example, with fruit or ice cream.

The Cross of Tejeda

Near Tejeda you have another prominent place, and also very touristy, the enclave known as The Cross of Tejeda.

It is a viewpoint at the top of the mountain, from where you will surely have the best panoramic views of the island of Gran Canaria, and where the Parador Nacional Cruz de Tejeda.

In this enclave, every day there is an artisans' market that is highly visited by tourists, as there local artisans offer the most diverse traditional craft objects.

How to get to Tejeda

To go to Tejeda from the city of Las Palmas, it will take you an hour by car passing through the aforementioned Cruz de Tejeda, and from the Maspalomas area it will take you an hour and a half passing through Fataga.

  • Thank you José Luis for your concise and practical explanations. Tejeda is always on lists of the most beautiful towns in Spain and I fervently recommend the climb to Roque Nublo. It can be done from La Culata through a 7-kilometer circular hiking route, or also by leaving the car in the Degollada de La Goleta parking lot and walking just three kilometers (round trip) along a comfortable path. Greetings, teacher.
