One of the great attractions that a trip through Asturias, from a cultural point of view, is to discover the great richness of its industrial heritage, a result of the great activity that industries such as steel and mining had in the past.

Can you imagine being able to visit a small town, built in its day to be the residence of engineers and workers dedicated to the activity?

I'm talking about Bustiello, which you can visit very close to Mieres.

Built in 1890 by the Spanish Coal Society, a mining company owned by Claudio López Bru, Marquès de Comillas, the old mining town of Bustiello is an example of what was called industrial paternalism.

Bustiello It was a socio-labor utopia project, where engineers and workers lived together in the same town, although distributed hierarchically. In this town, which also had a great Catholic inspiration, there was a large church, separate schools for boys and girls, a sanatorium, a pharmacy and a casino.

Today, this old mining town is a neighborhood of Mieres, and in one of its buildings it houses a Interpretation Center where you can learn the curious history of what was Bustiello.
