Discover what the king crab safari activity is like for fishing and tasting in Lapland in northern Norway

Un trip to northern Norway in winter cannot be focused exclusively on trying to see northern lights, but rather the objective should be to live various snow experiences.

And one of the activities that cannot be missed is king crab safari like the one I participated in during my recent winter trip to Norway.

Butwhat is a king crab?

It is a huge red crab, characteristic of the Bering Sea, whose weight in the case of the Norwegian variant can exceed four kilos, and with the separation of its legs it can reach a build of more than one and a half meters.

In a previous trip to North CapeAlso in Norway, I already knew what the tourist experience of king crab fishing is like, but I will tell you that the activity develops very differently in winter compared to summer.

In the summer season for king crab fishing speed boats are used zodiac that take you through the fjord to the place where the king crabs are found.

And, yes, then you return to land where in that case, in a store type Sami, the crabs are cooked and then enjoyed.

In winter, in an enclave as far north as Kirkenes, for "fish"The crabs have to ride on a big sled that is pulled by a snowmobile, which takes you along the frozen and snow-covered surface of what is a tongue of sea.

You will have previously put on the appropriate clothing to carry out the activity, a thermal jumpsuit and a helmet.

Soon you will arrive at the place prepared for the activity, a gap in the ice layer that covers the sea through which “will fish” king crabs.

In reality it is a “simulation” because the king crab It is a protected species, with catch limits established for fishermen...and also for companies that develop tourist activity.

After removing them from the nets where they are found, the crabs are “sacrificed” so that they can then be cooked.

Of course, the time comes to take a photo with the crab's legs open so you can show off its enormous complexion.

Then, again aboard the sleigh pulled by the snowmobile, you are taken across the frozen surface of the sea to another place on its shores, where in a forest is the comfortable wooden house where you can taste the crabs.

The crabs will have previously been cooked with water, after which you can give yourself the “bellyful” to eat the delicious meat of the enormous crab legs, which I can tell you are a delicious gastronomic delicacy.

Finally the time comes to return on another new excursion with the snowmobile and sleigh, which in itself is quite an experience.

This was one of the activities that offers visitors the ice Hotel where we spent a night in Kirkenes, which lasts about three hours and costs 190 euros per person.

  • Can you guide me on the king crab excursion, how do I hire it? We arrived on the MSC cruise on 25/5, if there is one in Spanish, it is another question or name of the company that makes it...

  • I want to do the king crab excursion, I will be in Kirkenes from December 27 to 29, 2018. What is the price of the excursion for two people?
