And this despite the fact that it is not located within the main premises of the ancient roman city de Pompeii, but outside of it.

I am referring to the Villa of Mysteries, one of more than a hundred roman villas that have been found in the excavations carried out so far in the surroundings of the Vesuvius volcano.

But to justify the interest in visit the Villa of the Mysteries, I can tell you that, from my point of view, it is the most fascinating corner of the excavations, both for its good state of conservation and the Roman frescoes it shows.

How to get to the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii

To get to this corner, you have to leave the archaeological remains of Pompeii awarded by the Herculaneum Gate, on the northwest side of them.

After touring the area known as the Necropolis, soon you arrive at the Villa of Mysteries, an old country villa now quite rebuilt, which in Roman times had direct access to the sea.

La Villa of Mysteriess was built in the 2nd century BC on a slope, facing the beach, and later, in the 1st century AD it was expanded.

You can see a sample of the latter when you visit the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii.

In it you find the reconstruction of a winepress where grapes were squeezed, and where you can now see a large trunk.

But the great artistic jewel of the Villa of the Mysteries You find it in the rooms on its west façade, the one facing the beach, which were inhabited by the owners of the house.

Here you can see a large room (triclinium) with a large and colorful Pompeian fresco that covers the three walls.

In this beautiful fresco a rite of initiation of the Dionysian mysteries is represented,...and hence the name of the Villa of Mysteries.

To organize my walk through Pompeii, a map would be useful to know what my route will be. How can I get it?
    Thank you
