Mmmm… The place has a very special feel, but it is not one of my favorites. I think there are castles (in ruins or not) with better views. Just as I don't think that Loch Ness deserves the fame it has. There are much more spectacular lochs throughout Scotland and they are also less traveled. Loch Tay or Loch Linnhe, for example, mirror the environment much more often, they are not so narrow and their water is not so cloudy... Although on a first visit it is a MUST, if you return to Scotland I would pass it by stop calmly… and without any burden of conscience!
And someone tells you that she is such a freak that it wasn't enough to live for almost 1 year in the heart of Scotland, but she also comes back once a year... 😉
To a large extent I agree with you. Many times, when a place has a lot of fame, you arrive at it and it may disappoint you. That happened to me with Loch Ness, although I really liked the visit to Urquhart Castle. The multimedia presentation is a good introduction to the visit.
In summary, on a first trip to Scotland, I do think it is a visit, let's say, highly recommended, although it is true that if I repeat the trip, I would take the opportunity to visit other enclaves :)
Nice place. It must be beautiful.
