After my most recent trip to Ghent, in the Belgian region of Flanders, I will tell you that there are few cities in the world as beautiful to walk at night.
What's more, I don't remember a historic center so well lit, which allows the charm of monuments and buildings to be highlighted.
Well, I will tell you that, indeed, in Ghent Not only are the monuments in its medieval center illuminated.
In Ghent the facades of most of the buildings are also illuminated, with that special charm that the houses in Flanders have, with an atmosphere that takes you to a fairy tale place.
For that reason alone it is worth organizing your trip to Flanders so that you can spend at least one night in Ghent.
If not, and you limit yourself to a day trip, you will miss one of its great attractions.
If you stay in a hotel in the historic center during your stay, there will be almost no street that you walk along at night, to go to or return from dinner, in which the buildings are not properly illuminated.
But in addition to the medieval center, since 2010 in Ghent You also find several peripheral neighborhoods illuminated.
For this reason it is logical that the city of Ghent show off the award he received in 2004, the City-People-Light Award, for said lighting.
Light Festival 2016 in Ghent
Furthermore, this aspect of Illuminated Ghent has a special milestone with the Festival of Light which takes place every three years, and which coincides with being celebrated this year 2018.
In this event, international artists and designers illuminate the city for four nights with special installations, while performances are carried out in which light plays a major role.
Specifically the Ghent Light Festival dates, are from January 31 to February 4, in schedules from 19 p.m. to 24 p.m.
For your trip to this Flemish city, you can night walk through Ghent downloading this brochure with a route through Illuminated Ghent
This way you ensure that you will see the corners of the city that are most highlighted by the night lighting.
If you want to do the complete route, I can tell you that it will take you about two hours.
To note that the decorative lighting It remains on until 12 midnight, at which time it is replaced by functional lighting.

Good morning, José Luis:
I recommend visiting Ghent at any time because it is simply beautiful, but it is true that with the triannual Light Festival you have a different vision of it, above all, very photogenic.
Carlos, regarding the things that you say you cannot miss in Ghent, and with reference to the polyptych of the “Adoration of the Mystical Lamb”, now you can even attend the restoration processes that it has been undergoing since 2012. At least, the restoration is planned until 2019.
A greeting.
beautiful place I love it.
