Where to see and visit Checkpoint Charlie, former border crossing and most visited tourist site of the former Berlin Wall: photos

One of the axes of your Berlin visit, riding a Germany, it is undoubtedly the old Wall which from 1961 to 1989 separated the German capital into two parts.

El Checkpoint Charlie It is currently one of the most visited places by those of us who travel to Berlin.

Located in the old border crossing of the Friedrichstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie has become one of the most symbolic points of the ancient Berlin Wall, as it was the place where the tanks of the Allied powers and the Soviet Union came to threaten each other in 1961.

The name of Charlie comes from the nomenclature used by the NATO to indicate border post C that allowed traffic between East Berlin y West Berlin, while the other two border posts A and B served as a connection between West Germany and German Democratic Republic.

What to see when visiting Checkpoint Charlie

Now when you visit the Checkpoint Charlie you can see one control booth which was rebuilt in August 2000 to remember this symbolic border crossing.

This booth is always very busy with tourists who want to take photos with the costumed actors of border guards, who carry North American flags.

If you are interested in taking your own souvenir, I can tell you that they will charge you two euros per person.

In front of the booth stands a mast with a double-sided display case that shows on each side photos of the last American and Russian soldiers who guarded the Checkpoint Charlie when it was demolished in June 1990.

Likewise, in front of the booth there is the so-called Checkpoint Wall Museum (Haus museum).

On your visit to this very charismatic point of Berlin, you will also find on the walls of the adjacent streets a outdoor exposure, Checkpoint Gallery, with large information panels and photographs that illustrate the history of the wall.

With texts in German and English, I recommend that you visit this exhibition to understand what the Berlin Wall, not only in the history of the city, but as a symbol of the confrontation of Cold War between the West and the Soviet bloc.
