Our coast-to-coast trip through the United States We started it by arriving very early at the Barcelona airport, to take the plane that takes us to newark airport en New York.

It was a smooth and punctual flight, and we arrived in Newark at 14:XNUMX p.m. local time, after eight and a half hours of flying.

After passing without problems the immigration controls, it's time to pick up the rental car, for which we take one of the airport's automatic trains that takes us to the Rent-a-Car.

After presenting the essential national driving license and the highly recommended international license, we go for the Chevrolet Impala that we had booked in advance, an almost new car, spacious, comfortable and with automatic transmission.

Of course, at the rental office they were surprised because we rejected a Honda, probably more reliable, but we wanted to drive an American car.

From the airport our route begins by going directly to a motel in the town of Edison.

In Barcelona we only booked the first three nights in the United States, the first two in Edison and the third in Lancaster.

The town of Edison owes its name to Thomas Alva Edison, who managed to maintain incandescent light for the first time in this city and also record sound.

Around 16:15 p.m. we arrived at the hotel.

The hotel is managed by Indians, who appear to be acquiring the hotel franchises of the various motel chains.

Once settled in the hotel room, and after watching the World Cup soccer semi-final between Spain and Germany, we headed to a nearby shopping center, where we made our first purchase at the supermarket.

We are surprised by the very good presentation of the fruits and vegetables.

As we were able to see throughout the trip, the fresh produce section is always very well cared for, very well presented, which makes the fruits and vegetables very appetizing.

Tras dine in a restaurant of the chain Muscle Maker GrillAt 20 pm we were already stretched out in bed.

For us it was 2 in the morning. Now Aurora is sleeping soundly.

El air conditioner It makes a lot of noise, but tiredness gets the better of us and we can easily fall asleep.

Outside it is very hot, also humid, with a temperature that must be around 37º.

End of the first day where everything has gone well, we have already reached the beginning of our dream.

We will stay a couple of nights in this hotel and we have a backpack full of hopes, projects, plans and we are open to new experiences.

  • Hello, I wanted to poll your opinion about the trip I want to start in the USA from 25.7.2011/3.9.2011/10 to 14/1992/42, with my children of 1992 and 10.000 years old, with the idea of visiting the vast majority of National Parks and the most emblematic cities. At first I considered doing it by car, but since the idea is to visit both coasts and areas of influence, Plateau Colorado, Yellowstone, Memphis, Louisiana. Orlando for the amusement parks, but we will combine it with plane jumps. I made a similar trip in 80 with my wife for 30 days, the trip was great, and relatively at a good price, now, I think things will be a little more expensive, but if you could guide me on costs, or at least an average of daily expenses, it would be very useful to me, leaving aside the flights, since we already have these controlled. The idea is that it is a trip/experience for everyone but especially for them. On my trip in XNUMX we traveled about XNUMX km by car and XNUMX plane transfers (it's a shame that the Delta airpass for unlimited flights for XNUMX days has disappeared, without any security problem, neither in the deserts nor in the swamps, but yes That we had to avoid more than a probable assault in Albuquerque, my question is how do you see it to make this trip currently with two children. I would also appreciate any advice for this trip. Thank you for your explanations and advice

    • Anthony,

I think I can inform you with enough precision since during the entire traveling trip through the United States and Canada we were writing down all the economic issues.
It is important before entering into the numbers, to specify some points, which I already detailed in my trip writing and which are:
. All data refer to the expenses incurred by me and my wife, that is, 2 people
. We almost always stayed in Days Inn, Travelodge, Ramada Inn, Super 8, Knights Inn, Howard Johnson brand motels, all belonging to the Wyndham Worldwide group (http://www.wyndhamworldwide.com). They are of medium category, decent, with internet. In NYC we stayed at the Pennsylvania Hotel, in Monument Valley at a Holiday Inn, and in the Sequoias at a Best Western.
. The rooms, although we were two people, always had two double beds (King Size or Queen Size), meaning that if you travel with 2 children you could use a single room with these characteristics for all 4 at the same price.
. The hotels were almost always on the outskirts of the cities, which makes car parking (free) and the price easier!!
. We always had breakfast in the motels, simple but reasonable and included in the price of the room). We almost always ate at one of the many chain restaurants there, especially Dennys, Taco Bell, KFC, Applebees, Craker Barrel, Wendys, etc. Dinners were almost always in the hotel room with purchases we had made in supermarkets.
. In the national parks the entrance is $20 per car and in Monument Valley (which is beautiful and is not part of the national park network because it belongs to the Navajo Indians) only $15. There are vouchers for all parks that significantly improve the price if you visit 3 or more.

The average daily expenses, excluding car rental, during the 64 days and 18,118 kilometers of our car trip were as follows (in dollars):
      . Hotel $87
      . Gasoline and tolls $19
      . Parking $5
      . Supermarkets, soft drinks $16
      . Restaurants $37
      . Tickets (national parks, museums, monuments,…) $18
. Miscellaneous (souvenirs, taxis, others) $9
      Average daily total: $191

In general the hotels are quite well priced. Stays in NYC (7 nights at $170/night, in Canada where they are more expensive, and close to some national parks like Monument Valley) make the average more expensive but even so, I consider an average of $87 per night to be very reasonable (equivalent to 60 euros) for this type of hotels.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
      Thank you
