What is the experience of a tour of Harlem with Gospel?

If you are curious to know What is a sightseeing tour of Harlem like?, here you have our friend's story Salvador Samaranch, who signed up for one of these tours in a Sunday during his most recent trip to New York.

This experience will serve as a reference, although each tour has its characteristics depending on many factors, such as the company you hire, the day of the week it takes place or the Baptist church you visit.

I hope you find it useful.

At 8 o'clock in the morning they picked us up by bus to do the Harlem tour, with Gospel mass included. It is a tour that takes place every Sunday and had to end around 13:XNUMX p.m. About twelve people got into our hotel.

The guide was a young man, the son of Colombian parents but born in New York, quite nice and, as he explained to us, with a wife, mother-in-law and four daughters.

The departure was a bit confusing, as we had to go to the Sheraton hotel to pick up more tourists, and we had to split into two buses.

In this process we had to suffer for a while the impertinence of a Spanish lady (the tour was in Spanish) who was very touchy and did not want to sit at the back of the bus because she considered that to be insulting.

Anyway, after a while the issue was resolved by sending the woman and her self-conscious and embarrassed daughter to the other bus.

Ronnie, the guide, was quite attentive and explained a multitude of things to us. curiosities about New York, about your life, about your experience, about how to attend some attractions or shows for free or at a better price than the official one.

He also told us about the different places we saw during the tour.

Harlem It is a neighborhood of the Manhattan Island which since the 1920s has been an important residential, cultural and business center for the African American community.

Harlem has been defined by a series of boom and bust cycles, with significant ethnic changes accompanying each cycle.

The resurgence of the New York City at the end of the 20th century has also led to the renewal of Harlem.

The neighborhood maintains a predominance of black residents, but in recent years it has grown with new middle-class European-American, Hispanic and Asian residents.

This New York neighborhood has experienced a positive evolution thanks to strong investments and a very tough line against crime.

There has also been a real estate boom, with rising prices, many renovated houses, and now it is beginning to be a neighborhood where it is pleasant to live.

In our Harlem tour we pass in front of the Apollo Theatre, undoubtedly the most famous club associated almost exclusively with African-American artists.

They explained to us that new artists came out on stage to show their art for a few minutes. and that the public acted like a judge, whistling and stamping their feet if they didn't like it, or applauding wildly at the other end.

Artistic talent scouts followed these popular verdicts.

In this central area of Harlem, north of Central Park, we pass, we pass by Sylvia's, a reference point for southern food, for the Liberation bookstore and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

We also saw two of the most important streets that bear the names of relevant black leaders, the 125 street y Lenox Avenue, also called Martin Luther King y Malcom X.

On the west side, bordering the Hudson River, we saw the Columbia University and the enormous Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the largest in the United States.

Also in this area is the Spanish Society of America.

We made a brief visit to the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, and from there we headed to Sylvan Terrace, a small street that leads you to Morris Jumel Mansion Museum.

On this cobblestone street there are rows of historic wooden houses that date back to 1882.

La Morris-Jumel Mansion, located in Washington Heights, is the oldest house in Manhattan. It served as headquarters for both sides during the American Revolution.

From there we went to the Memorial Baptist Church to the celebration of Gospel mass.

We attended the first part of the ceremony, where tourists occupied more or less half of the capacity, which was not very large; I estimated about 400 people.

In the second part of the celebration, only the faithful of the area remain, without tourists. The African-American attendees were all very elegant.

The religious service was presided over by a priest with the help of several assistants, and the choir was made up of men and women, all black, except for one singer who was white, all in their gala dresses.

In this first part of the ceremony, to the rhythm of drums and guitars, and with a lot of marching, several songs were sung that sometimes gave you goosebumps. Between them and the local attendees they made great choruses.

When they finished, they gently accompanied us to the exit to continue alone with the Sunday services, letting in more parishioners who occupied the seats that we had left empty.

I sincerely think that the money they charge tourists for this three-quarter hour exhibition goes a long way to the parish.

And from our point of view, it is very worth it because the songs really shake you, and we all end up dancing on the benches.

  • Hello Jose Luis. I'm going to New York on October 27th until November 2nd with my mother. We had planned a tour that they offered us to visit one of the Gospel Masses, but due to the organization of the marathon on November 2, it has been canceled. So I was wondering if I would have a problem if I went on my own on October 29, which falls on a Wednesday, since I have seen that some masses are held on Wednesdays or Sunday the 2nd, and I don't know if it is canceled that day because of the marathon or because reason..
    A greeting.

    • Elena, I honestly cannot guarantee that you will be able to attend a gospel service on a Wednesday. This August, when I was in New York, I tried and couldn't locate a suitable place. Maybe it was because it was the month of August.

I advise you to consult the websites of the communities where they indicate that they carry out gospel services on Wednesdays.

  • Interesting information, just a clarification: it is incorrect to call it a “gospel mass”, because Baptists do not celebrate “masses” and it may even be offensive to them that their services are called that. It would be more appropriate to say: religious services, meetings or any similar denomination. Greetings and thanks for the very useful information on your site.

  • Your comment lullaby is very good, excellent..!
I lived in Madrid and had the honor of enjoying the Musica Golpel de Madrid choir. Very good...!, but I know that nothing compares with the choirs of North America.

I intend to go to New York at the beginning of November, but I don't have Sundays on my list :(, has anyone been to church on a weekday?

I know I have a lot of time left for my trip, but I was in New York and I didn't really know it due to lack of experience, so now I want to do everything in advance, so as not to miss the most important things I want to do.

Many blessings..! Ah, everyone who attends that wonderful Cogol music party, enjoy it, you will see that it will be an unforgettable experience...

  • First of all, clarify that these are NOT “masses” that word is used only for Catholic religious services. The Gospel is born in the EVANGELICAL Churches (which are not “evangelical” as they are usually called in Spain and especially in the BAPTIST, non-Baptist (literal translation of the English word “baptist”) Evangelical Baptist Churches (which are part of the Protestant churches "has existed in Spain for centuries. For political reasons, attempts have been made to deny this fact throughout history. We have been harshly persecuted and now that in theory we are free, we suffer "denial" from the media, which invents words that do not exist so as not to have to use the real names that are read on the doors of our temples and that identify us. We are a branch of Christianity that emerged from the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, although there were already groups prior to this. We are not a sect. Regarding Gospel, in Spain there are also some choirs, of course not comparable to the American ones, but quite worthy. On occasions some of them have collaborated with North American groups and artists, such as the Brooklyn Tabernacle or Richard Smallwood.

  • Hello Jose Luis…..I am traveling in September with my daughter to New York and the idea is to visit a church in Harlem….which one do you recommend to visit, which one has the most beautiful mass and which one is the safest to go alone…. And how do I get to the churches?' …thank you. greetings

    • Silvina, although I still have to attend a gospel mass on my next trip to New York, from what I have been told and the experiences I have been able to read, there is no danger. Please note that masses are on Sunday mornings.
As for where to go, Abyssinian is the most prepared for tourists, but if you want to avoid crowds, you can go, for example, to Bethal. In this same post you have Millán's experience.

  • I am going to New York in July and I would like to attend a Gospel mass but my stay does not coincide with a Sunday. The masses offered in the three churches that you include in the link on Wednesday afternoons, is it certain that there is a Gospel mass on those days and at that time of year? Can I go on my own or would I need to book an excursion? (I'd rather not have to.) Thank you so much

    • María, I cannot assure you that in July they will have mass on Wednesdays, but in the links of each church you will have updated information. You can even contact them to confirm it.

Of course you can go on your own. It is not at all necessary for you to sign up for an excursion.

      • Thank you José Luis. I have contacted the Bethel Gospel Assembly and they have indeed confirmed that they have a service on Wednesdays at 6.45 pm. What they do not specify in their response is whether Gospel music is sung in that service. Should I understand that this is the case, or could it be that it was a normal mass? Many thanks for your help. Greetings

  • I plan to travel in January. Is it safe where the church is? (since I would go alone) which one would you specifically recommend? Greetings!

    • Daniela, where the most popular churches are located where you can go to see the gospel, do not have a security problem.

In any case, the church most visited by tourists (you may feel safer going there) is the Abyssinian Baptist Church (132 W 138th Street; gospel mass open to tourists at 11 a.m.)

  • I'm going to New York the week of November 2-8 and I would like to go to gospel mass for myself and my friends. Can you give me information and price?
    Thank you

    • Hector, I understand that you mean going to the Gospel mass on a tour organized by a tourist agency, because if you go on your own, it is free. In this post you have the information.

Regarding going with an agency, in this link you have information and prices

I hope you find it useful
